In this article we shall examine three texts of the Bṛhadāraṇyaka-Upaniṣad BAU which serve as remarkable examples of the above-mentioned principles. They are 1, 4, 1-8; II, 1 and II, 3, all three referent to the ātman. We find in them three conceptions of the ātman, different among themselves, which mark three stages of the evolution of the ātman’s notion, and also a noteworthy presence of archaic elements.
